Sifnos is an ideal place for trekking/hiking especially in spring and early summer, April, May, June and in autumn, September, October and November.
There are many kilometers of footpaths all over Sifnos, some of them signed and some not, some with stone steps and some without, protected by dry stone walls, connecting villages, leading to monasteries on top of hills or strolling inside NATURA protected area.
On your way you can see stone storehouses, little chapels, ancient towers and historic monuments, goats and sheep grazing lazily or climbing lively, small cultivated pieces of land, many herbs, plants, flowers and our protected kind of cedar tree.
There are more than one hiking maps to purchase if you want to try some of the routes yourself and most of the marked routes are easy to follow. So, if this is what you want, you probably don't need a guide. But if you would like to know more about the island, talk with a local about habits and customs, myths and legends of the island, religious celebrations and stories, information about everyday life in the past and present, authenticity and tourist traps, but also history, architecture, agriculture, pottery and gastronomy, then having a local guide is the easiest and most interesting way to do it!! Routes are planned on request according to the special interests, ages and stamina, needs and wishes of the participants and usually last about 2 – 4 hours.
You don't need special equipment to join, only walking shoes, water and hat! And a camera for photos of course!
It is not advisable to join though, in case you suffer from any respiration, heart or other health problems. Asthma, diabetes, and other health problems easier to be controlled it is advisable to be mentioned to the guide in order to avoid any inconvenience.
Trekking tours may be cancelled or rescheduled due to unsuitable weather conditions.
